Here you can discuss paint schemes, kit details etc. for flying and non-flying scale models.

I noticed a really cool paint job on the underside of an F-16XL. It looks like a ferris scheme. I have the reissued Kangam 1/32nd scale model kit and I want to do that paint scheme. However I need to know what is on the topside, is it the standard red-white-blue prototype scheme or is it a ferris scheme on the topside as well?

You've got a looot of work ahead of you if you wanna make an accurate XL model. And h2 can probably back me up on this: the kangram kit if a copy of the Revell, which is very inaccurate.

The Revell > Ace > Kangham kit is the standard F-16A fuselage from the Hasegawa kit with "new" wings. The kit does not depict the fuselage plugs that were part of the XL mod. As a result there is no way for the wing planform to be accurate either.

The paint scheme in the photo was indeed designed by Keith Ferris. Be aware it was only worn by F-16XL #2, the two-seater, so that scheme would be incorrect for the single-seat Kangham kit.

But then, considering the rest of the kit, what the heck... ;)

I'd say the paint scheme is probably the same from the top as the bottom. If you look closely, you see the refuelling umm triangular guide thing on the bottom and also a repaint of the canopy by the intake. It's like a flip over. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

I have top and bottom views of this scheme (with FS #s) from someone who crewed it at Edwards, let me know if you still want to do the scheme in 1:32. It is very similar top/bottom but haven't looked at the dwgs in quite a while.

Thanks guys, I don't know if I want to get into trying to do surgery on an already inaccurate kit, but I love Ferris Schemes and the prototype scheme is pretty boring. Habu2 if you wanna post the topside photos or e-mail them to me, that would be great.

He's my 48th scale attempt with some help from a friend, built back in 92.
Sacrificed a Hasegawa F-16A to make the extensions and used Verlinden cockpit sets, 2 of course.

The fuselage extension was went well, but the "Scorpion" 4 degree cant was missed, as were the cranked LEF's. Wings were a B*&#h to do and ended up shaping sheet plastic over a "Guess work" former.

Used a couple of pics from the Edwards History office, but the ones I really wanted were not releasable at the time.

I have ship 1 in the works that will be much more accurate and straight compared to this trail run

can you contact me off baord about your pics?

Thanks, Mike

I've got the new Hasegawa F-2A....NICE! I'd rock one.
I was glad it came out, because I could a side by side comparison....or in this case, inside outside comparison. The whole fuselage of the F-16 fits INSIDE the F-2s!

Oh yeah, I have started the F-2A, but it'll be on hold for while along with everything else. I'm getting a new house here shortly, so I'll be packing up the workbeanch pretty eventually.

I also have the F-2B, which is every bit asnice as the single seater. Man, can you imagine if the F-16 were retooled to that standard!
